Asteroids
Asteroids Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects that orbit the Sun but are too small to be considered planets. They are known as minor planets. Asteroids range in size from Ceres, which has a diameter of about 1000 km, down to the size of pebbles. Sixteen asteroids have a diameter of 240 km or greater. They have been found inside Earth's orbit to beyond Saturn's orbit. Most, however, are contained within a main belt that exists between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Some have orbits that cr

THE FIRST USE OF RADAR Research Methods July 4, 2003 During World War II, battles were won by the side that was first to spot enemy airplanes, ships, or submarines. To give the Allies an edge, British and American scientists developed radar technology to see for hundreds of miles, even at night. The research that went into improving radar helped set the stage for post-war research into the transistor. 1940s radar relied on a semiconductor crystal, or rectifier. Radar worked by sending out a radi

ANGELIC OVERVIEW: Angels are spirits, proclaimed St. Augustine! St. Thomas Aquinas believed that angels were pure spirit, having no matter or mass, and taking up no space; but Thomas believed angels could assume bodies at will. The purpose of angels is the same as mankind: to love and serve the Lord. However, being that angels are not material beings, and possibly from a different dimension, they can serve the Lord in many different ways. Angels have far greater will and intellect than we have

Our Solar System at a Glance INTRODUCTION From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for untold thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars. They called these objects planets, meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities -- Jupiter, king of the gods; Mars, the god of war; Mercury, messenger of the gods; Venus, the god of love and beauty, and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture. The stargazers also obs

Asteroids Our Minor Planets
Asteroids: Our Minor Planets” Earth is one sole object in the universe, which everyone is familiar with. Stretching beyond this planet are several other planets in the solar system and several thousand other celestial objects also known to revolve around the sun. These minor objects are called asteroids. Asteroids are metallic, rocky objects without atmospheres that orbit the Sun. Even though they orbit the sun, they are too small to be classified as planets, so they are often referred to as m

COMETS AND ASTEROIDS Casey Witthohn English 11R-9 Elberth A quick look at the scarred face of the moon provides evidence enough to see that space is not an empty place. Small bodies of rock and frozen materials are traveling around space at all times. As far as scientists can tell, they have been since the dawn of time. These space rocks are known as asteroids, comets, and meteors. Usually, people look at them as a work of art, or a phenomenon, until they come too close. Every few years a comet

Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic Spectrum The electromagnetic spectrum is made up of six different types of waves. Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared waves, Visible light, Ultraviolet light, X-rays and Gamma rays. The radio waves are used to transmit radio and television signals. The infrared waves are used to tell temperature of areas. Visible light is all the colors that we can see. Ultraviolet light can help things grow but to much can cause diseases such as skin cancer. X-rays are used as a tool to find broke

Near Earth Objects What are NEOs? Where do they come from? Do they pose any real threat to Earth? Can they provide viable space resources? All of these questions are now under investigation by planetary scientist. There are two highly recognized research programs that I will discuss with you. The Spaceguard program is sponsored and run by NASA Ames Space Science Division: Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazard. Also under the direction of Dr. Tom Gehrels the University of Arizona has the Spacewatch pr
