TOPIC 2. An experience or achievement that has had significant meaning in your life ( You may discuss an obstacle that you have overcome )
The intellectual achievement that I feel is my most prominent academic experience is participating, for the second consecutive year, in the Prince of Wales Robotics Team. This was an opportunity to gain valuble insights into designing and manufacturing electrical robots with fellow teammates and professional engineers.
Firstly, in connection with my involvement in the Robotics Team, I was able to learn the systematic ways of applying textbook material to realistic problem solving. This was my greatest challenge. As a member of a core group, we were able to devise a functional remote-controlled robot designed to achieve a specific task under the constraints of time. As a consequence of team effort and ingenuity, we ranked first in our province of British Columbia at the 1996 National Championships. Another aspect of my participation with this high school club in problem solving was to acquire the neccessary funds in the construction materials, competition fees as well as for personal expenses required for traveling outside the province for competitions. Fund-raising was both stressful and difficult due to the fact that corporate sponsors had limited resources and could not finance to the extent that had been previously predicted. As time progressed, the situation worsened simply because the district school board received financial cuts due to the reduced provincial budget. The problem of convincing sponsors outside of the norm became a task in itself. With this type of experience, I am sure that I can organize a better fund-raising scheme as an active member in future groups.
However, without any doubt to have a successful fund-raising campaign, promotion is definitely necessary. The main reason for this is that if the knowledge of about the team was other than "we need financial sponsors", then they could have been more comfortable and probably even willingful to donate larger sums of money simply because they "could see" and trust where the money was being spent. Hence, how to get people familiar about our Robotics Team became critical. For instance, during last year's promotion scheme, I performed the usual marketing mix with our team. Such a mix consisted of distributing invitations for a Robotics Cocktail Party, sending out business letters to target corporations and finallly, voicing the team's bulletin in the school announcements. I believe the promotion of the team was not intensified throughout the school year because it did not leave a lasting impression, or sufficient information about the Robotics Competition itself to potential sponsors and students. Therefore, the image of the "Prince of Wales Robotics Team" could still not escape the stigma of "a team that does nothing but needs money". This could explain why it became extremely difficult when we actually tried to obtain financial aid from our sponsors. Such a precious experience is essential and recommended for any student who loves engineering because in the real and cut-throat business world, most engineering projects require business finances in order to be successfully achieved.
In conclusion, my participation in the Prince of Wales Robotics Team helped me to gain valuble insights into designing and manufacturing electrical robots with fellow teammates and professional engineers. In addition, I gained some precious intellectural and business experience which I never encountered before.

Henry David Thoreau and Herman Melville focused their writings on how Henry David Thoreau and Herman Melville focused their writings on how man was affected by nature. They translated their philosophies though both the portrayal of their protagonist and their own self exploration. In Moby Dick, Melville writes about Ahab's physical and metaphysical struggle over the great white whale, Moby Dick, symbolic of man's struggle against the overwhelming forces of nature. Ahab's quest is reported and experienced through the eyes of Ishmael. Melville's use of the third pe

Character DevelopmentCharacter Development The story follows the life, if it could even be called that, a debatable topic covered in this book, about a robot is named Andrew Martin. Andrew was built in a factory, made to serve whatever human family decided to have him as a servant. His original serial number, NDR-113, was based on his model type. Appearance-wise, he looked much like any robot would. He had lights, knobs, and was even made out of shiny metal. However, his model was specifically made to resemble human
Thumbs Down for MarsThumbs Down for Mars 1 English II 11 February 2004 There is no rationality backing the exploration and sought out manned missions to Mars with the economical and technological issues the United States faces at the present time. It is completely unrealistic for the U.S. to spend $700 billion of tax payers’ dollars to launch robots and humans 35 million miles away just to find out if the dead planet could have once conceived life forms billions of years ago. With all that is going on in the nation

Computer Science Computer Science Study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers—devices that automatically process information. Computer science traces its roots to work done by English mathematician Charles Babbage, who first proposed a programmable mechanical calculator in 1837. Until the advent of electronic digital computers in the 1940s, computer science was not generally distinguished as being separate from mathematics and engineering. Since
WHAT IS COMPUTER ENGINEERING AND WHAT TO COMPUTER ENGINEERS DO WHAT IS COMPUTER ENGINEERING AND WHAT TO COMPUTER ENGINEERS DO? There is a new global infrastructure currently in place that allows instant access to information anywhere in the world. An essential component of this new infrastructure is the host machine - the computer. Computer Engineers respond to the industry's demand for professionals who are knowledgeable in both hardware and software components - traditionally the domains of the Electrical Engineer and the Computer Scientist. Their integr
Abstract Abstract The advent of the Mind Age of intelligent robots envisioned by Hans Moravec will bring profound transformations in global social and technological structures and relations of an advanced intelligence to its environment. The ability of future machines to directly share experiences and knowledge with each other will lead to evolution of intelligence from relatively isolated individual minds to highly interconnected structural entities. The development of a network of communicating mobile

Artificial Intellegence Identification And Description Of The IssueArtificial Intellegence: Identification And Description Of The Issue Over the years people have been wanting robots to become more Intelligent. In the past 50 years since computers have been around, the computer world has grown like you wouldn't believe. Robots have now been given jobs that were 15 years ago no considered to be a robots job. Robots are now part of the huge American government Agency the FBI. They are used to disarm bombs and remove dangerous products from a site without putting
ModemsModems Modems are used to connect two computers over a phone line. Modem is short for Modulator Demodulator. It's a device that converts data from digital computer signals to analog signals that can be sent over a phone line. This is called modulation. The analog signals are then converted back into digital data by the receiving modem. This is called demodulation. A modem is fed digital information, in the form of ones and zeros, from the CPU. The modem then analyzes this information and convert
Neural NetworksNeural Networks A neural network also known as an artificial neural network provides a unique computing architecture whose potential has only begun to be tapped. They are used to address problems that are intractable or cumbersome with traditional methods. These new computing architectures are radically different from the computers that are widely used today. ANN's are massively parallel systems that rely on dense arrangements of interconnections and surprisingly simple processors (Cr95, Ga93).
RoboticsRobotics The image usually thought of by the word robot is that of a mechanical being, somewhat human in shape. Common in science fiction, robots are generally depicted as working in the service of people, but often escaping the control of the people and doing them harm. The word robot comes from the Czech writer Karel Capek's 1921 play “ R.U.R.” (which stands for Rossum's Universal Robots), in which mechanical beings made to be slaves for humanity rebel and kill their creators. From this, the
The ModemThe Modem First of all I would like to start with an introduction I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to learn about how a modem works in a computer. With modem we are able to access the Internet BBS' or Bulletin Board Systems. Technology and the Future of WorkTechnology and the Future of Work Every society creates an idealised image of the future - a vision that serves as a beacon to direct the imagination and energy of its people. The Ancient Jewish nation prayed for deliverance to a promised land of milk and honey. Later, Christian clerics held out the promise of eternal salvation in the heavenly kingdom. In the modern age, the idea of a future technological utopia has served as the guiding light of industrial society. For more than a century utopi
