There have been many heroes in many books, but none of them are

quite like a Hemingway hero. Santiago, from the book Old Man and the Sea,

is a good example of a Hemingway hero. Santiago portrays a Hemingway

hero by working alone, facing defeat, and going through physical pain.

Santiago portrays a Hemingway hero by working alone. “Santiago was

an old man who fished alone by the sea.” This is part of the Hemingway hero

pattern because he states that he works alone. “I cant fish with you anymore

Santiago.” This is part of the hero pattern because his fishing buddy can no

longer fish with him and he has to work alone.” It made the boy sad to see the

man come in alone each day.” The boy is sad that the man must fish alone

and not with a friend. Santiago was an old and lonely man and he was forced

to work alone.

Santiago portrays a Hemingway hero by facing defeat. “The old man

had gone 84 days without a single fish.” This shows Santiago facing defeat

because he has gone 84 days without any fish, and he still goes out and tries

again the next day.” Everyday the old mans skiff was empty.” This shows

Santiago facing defeat because everyday he comes back without a victory.

“Many fisherman would make fun of Santiago” because of his poor luck.

This shows Santiago facing defeat because even though people would make

fun of him he’d still try to catch fish and not give up. Santiago faces many

defeats but in the end all of his hard work pays off.

Santiago portrays a Hemingway hero by going through physical pain.

“Santiago has a sweat salted cut on his head.” This shows Santiagos physical

pain because he has a cut on his head and to make matters worse there is salt

in it. “Your killing me fish.” Santiago wants this fish so bad that he thinks

he’s going to die and death is very painful.” By now the old mans hands were

mushy.” This shows much physical pain because his hands are cut up and

hurting from the fishing line. Santiago goes through much physical pain

especially in the end when he is catches the big fish.

Santiago is a good example of a Hemingway hero. Santiago shows this

by working alone, facing defeat, and going through physical pain. As you can

see Santiago is a good example of a Hemingway hero.
