The time of the Civil War is very interesting time in our nations history. It was a time when our nation overcame major political and social conflicts. It was also the time of one of our greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln.
The conflicts at the beggining of the 1860ąs became very strong when Lincoln was elected President. This was because Lincoln was against slavery and wouldnąt allow it in the new territories. Before the election of 1860, South Carolina said it would secede from the Union if Lincoln was elected President. When Lincoln became President South Carolina seceded from the Union followed by Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Lincoln in his Inaugural Address stated that all federal property in the seceded states would be protected.
Nothing had been done to stop Confederate ( Southern ) troops from seizing federal buildings. Until they bombarded Fort Sumter. With this President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to help bring down the rebellion in the South.
No major battles were fought until several months after the beggining of the war. The first major battle was in July of 1861 when Union and Confederate soldiers met at the battle of Bull Run. Bull Run was an important battle not because it showed the finale outcome of the war, but because it showed this would be a long war, not one that would end in a few days.
The churning point of the war came when General Robert E. Lee and his men surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant. After this Union victories popped up everywhere and the war was over.
During the period of the Civil War Abraham Lincoln was President. President Lincoln had very strong impact on what occurred during this period. Without Lincoln becoming President the Union may never have split and without that occurring the struggle over slavery may never had occurred. One of the most important things President Lincoln did during this time period was passing the Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that all slaves were free who were in states that had seceded from the Union.
Another important individual during this time period was General Ulysses S. Grant. He was an important individual during this time because he won many major victories for the Union. He also had a major role in the outcome of the war.
I believe this was a good time in history because it was a period of change for our nation. It was a period of great change for our nation. It was a time when our country faced and answered many social and political problems. I believe this time period set the tone for the future because it proved our country could overcome its sectional differences.
