But you will receive power, when the Holy Spirit comes on you: and you will be my witnesses...” (Acts 1:8).

"Now about spiritual gifts, brother, I do not want you to be ignorant…4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. ” (1 Corinthians 12:1; 4-6 NIV).

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit. To another miraculous powers, to another prophesy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.” (1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV).

NOTE: The Greek word for gift, as used in these passages of scripture, is charisma.(Young’s analytical concordance)

Apparently the church in Corinth was confused about spiritual gifts. Paul’s opening statement, “…I do not want you to be ignorant” suggest they were off in left field on the issue. Paul wanted to clarify the issue.

The Gifts;

Message of Wisdom-

Message of knowledge-

Faith- Not the faith that each Christian has in regards to salvation. Perhaps intercessory or surrogate faith.

Gifts of healing- Able to heal various kinds of illnesses through the Holy Spirit and the name of Jesus

Miraculous powers- Any good action that goes beyond the normal human understanding that lends evidence of God at work.

Prophesy- The Spirit foretelling a coming event, or the Spirit indicating the will of God in a particular situation.

Distinguishing between spirits- Ability, through the Spirit to distinguish between good and evil spirits. A defense against false prophets

Speaking in different kinds of tongues- The ability, through the Spirit to speak in different languages not through normal means, could be earthly or spiritual languages.

Interpretation of tongues- The ability to interpret different languages so that the whole body of Christ may be edified by the message.

"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV).
