Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli tells of Stargirl Caraway and Leo Borlock. Stargirl is book of heartbreaking and is about a strange mysterious girl who enters Mica Area High School for first time in Arizona. ‘Stargirl’ sounds strange name and she is strange.
From the day Stargirl arrives at Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She wants to be popular. Most of her classmates hate her like Kevin (Leo’s best friend), Hillari Kimble (one of her classmates), and others. She has only one friend Dori Dilson and she wants to become Leo’s friend. Her classmates hate her because she cheers for other teams; she gives the birthday presents to everyone and sings ‘Happy Birthday’ in lunchroom. So Kevin wants to put her in Hot Seat, to take interview of a person. Leo tells no because he understands her feelings. Finally, Kevin invites her and sort of insults her by his classmates.
Later, Stargirl captures Leo’s heart with just one smile. Leo tries to understand her feelings and makes her understand of her attitude. So from next day he doesn’t see her in lunchroom as he usually does. And finally he figures out that her real name is Susan Caraway not Stargirl. Susan becomes gregarious and Leo becomes her boyfriend and every classmate likes her but not Dori Dilson. So she again turns into Stargirl.
This was fifteen years ago when Leo missed her for a purpose (dance). So he thinks that she doesn’t like him but Archie, a old man, tells that “... She loved you that much. What an incredibly lucky kid you were.” (p.178). As Stargirl used to send everyone a birthday gift, she sends Leo a porcupine necktie because Leo used to collect them.
This was a great book of love and relationship. This book is an easy read I would recommend for a teenager to do for a book report. Though some parts of the story bored me, but it was an excellent book I ever read. I\'ve never read something that really touched my heart as much as Stargirl. It shows that being true to ones self is a gift that few have, but it is what we all love and try to hide. I didn’t really write about it because this book doesn’t have a word to describe. This book is good for reading in summer. Once again I highly recommended this book to everybody and I want to read this book again. When I finished this book, I cried.
