The Sphinx was carved from the bedrock of the Giza plateau. The sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of the present god or pharaoh. It took many men and many years to build this great statue. In the year B.C 1400 thutmose the IV of Egypt uncovered this statue with many of his men. The body of the sphinx has been buried over with sand many times in the past thousand years. In the year B.C 1400 Thutmose IV of Egypt uncovered it, it took many men and many years to overcome this great feat. Then it was most recently in 1920 that is has been uncovered once again. Scientists have cleared away all of the sand, leaving it’s body fully uncovered. The person who was believed to be the builder of the sphinx was the pharaoh Khufu from the fourth dynasty he is the father of the great pharaoh Khafre. This was on the year of around B.C 2500, that it was dated by the great historian Herodatus. But it was later found that in the nineteen twenties that it was oddly dated back from beyond the last ice age which was more than twelve thousand years ago. Scientists still aren’t very sure of the date of the sphinx. Originally the sphinx was painted with bright colors and was very colorful. The sphinx is a towering sixty six feet tall and two hundred and forty feet in length. Which seems out of proportion but that was the way it was supposed to be built. The face of the sphinx is thirteen feet tall and eight feet wide. If one were to look at the sphinx one would notice that the beard and the nose are missing. It was first thought that the nose of the sphinx was shot off in the eighteenth century by napoleon men but drawings later suggested different; Those drawings showed that a Turk army leader had his soldiers use it for target practice. Long before napoleons, men came along. These are just some of the myths about the Sphinx’s missing facial features but scientists still believe that the Sphinx’s greatest problem was time.
