Some people believe that our ancestors have always eaten meat, so we should too. However, the truth of the matter is that, for the most part, they were vegetarians. Scientists have discovered that our ancestors only ate meat in extreme crisis. Their normal diet consisted of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. However, during the ice age when everything froze, and they couldn’t grow fruits and vegetables, they had to find other things to eat (Mitra 6). This resulted in the eating of animal flesh. Since then, it has become an unhealthy and unnecessary trend to eat meat.
One of the most common stereotypes that face vegetarians is they can’t be physically fit. However, studies have shown that, that couldn’t be any farther from the truth. In fact, vegetarians are stronger, more agile, and have more endurance than meat eaters. Even the world’s most powerful and longest-lived animals are vegetarians. The horse, oxen, buffalo, and elephant are all vegetarians, but they all have phenomenal strength and endurance (Mitra 10).
Many people think that by not eating meat you are missing out on many essential proteins. This is not true. Vegetarians get all the protein they need from other sources, like plants. The only way vegetarians could not fulfill their protein intake would be to not eat.
If you eat meat, then the protein you are getting originally came in the form of a plant. Animals get their protein from eating plants. So for every 16 pounds of grain and soy fed to cows, you only get back one pound on your plate. The other 15 pounds are either used by the cow to make energy, or to make some part of its own body that we do not eat (Lappe 69).
Saturated fat, cholesterol, nitrates, hormones, pesticides, herbicide residues, antibiotic preservatives and countless additives can be found in animal protein (Null 47). Even though the meat industry would have us think otherwise, animal protein is definitely worse for us than vegetable protein.
