All the technology we have created will bit the dust before the systems really are used. At the end of the century all systems that have calendars to monitor systems or use calendars to show dates will shut down all at once. Major electronic systems such as elevators, alarm systems, fax machines, telephones, cars with computer systems will be nothing more than paper weights or wall designs nothing more. For years computers and electronic equi

The ending of the millennium could bring many problems to our technolo The ending of the millennium could bring many problems to our technological society ; we have grown to rely on the most basic computer systems to make our lives convenient. In our attempts to streamline programming computer systems, we created a monster by using only the final 2-digits to represent a 4-digit year. Programmers were excited that they could save a couple of bytes of memory by cutting back the dates to 2-digit numbers. With the turning of the odometer, on December 31st, 1999, we po

Two seemingly small digits may turn January 1, 2000 from a worldwide celebration into a universal nightmare. With computers mistaking the year 2000 for 1900, virtually all businesses that use dates will be affected. Not only will the companies be affected, but they are paying millions upon millions of dollars in order for computers to recognize the difference between the years 2000 and 1900. The Year 2000 Problem The Year 2000 Problem Where did this problem come from? What is going to happen on January 1st, 2000? What will we be doing on New Year's Eve 1999? Will we be partying and celebrating like it's the beginning of the new millenium or will we be storing up on food, gas, and batteries for our survival? According to Professor Bill Erdly, Director of Computing and Software Systems at UWB, the Y2K problem certainly does exist and can result in some major problems if not corrected. (Nelson-White, 1/1

Feminism encompasses some widely differing views, however, including those advocating female separatism. Modern feminism, which was born with the great democratic revolutions of the 18th century (American and French), differed from its precursors in applying the democratic implications of the rights of man and the citizen to women as a group. Some people are afraid of this because every IBM compatible computer will have problems with the start of the year 2000. When the computers were made, they were built to only know the last two digits of the year. The first two digits were 19, and the last were blank. You might think that your computer will just go back to 1900. Well some will and some won't. That's okay for PC computers, but not business computers. Credit card companies wil
The Y2K BugThe Y2K Bug Introduction The year 2000 problem could have been completely prevented had some early people envisioned the degree to which the microprocessor would change our lives. Surely, no one would have thought that in the early days of ENIAC that everything from your alarm clock to your car would be computerized. Even the IT managers of the 80's could not be blamed: The disk space savings from dropping the two digits of the date over 100 Million Records would represent almost 200 Megabytes!
Acient MathematicsAcient Mathematics The earliest records of advanced, organized mathematics date back to the ancient Mesopotamian country of Babylonia and to Egypt of the 3rd millennium BC. There mathematics was dominated by arithmetic, with an emphasis on measurement and calculation in geometry and with no trace of later mathematical concepts such as axioms or proofs. The earliest Egyptian texts, composed about 1800 BC, reveal a decimal numeration system with separate symbols for the successive powers of 10 (1,
