Great Tsars of Russia

First off I’d like to point out that jus the title tsar was not the only thing applied.

The full title of a Tsar was very, very, very lengthy. According article 59 of the Russian constitution of April 1906 “the full title of His Imperial Majesty is as follows: We, --- By the grace of god, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias, of Moscow, Kiev, Vladimir, Novgorod, Tsar of Tauric Khesones, Tsar of Grusia, Lord of Pskov, and Grand Duke of Smolensk, Lithuania, Volhynia, Padolia, and Finland, Prince of Estonia, Livonia, Courland and Semgalia, Samogitia, Bielostok,Korelia, Tver, Jugra, Perm, Vyatka, Bulgaria, and other terreoties; Lord and Grand Duke of Novgorod, Chernigov; Ruler of Ryazan, Polotsk, Rostov, Jaroslav, Bielozero, Udoria, Kondia, Vitebsk, Mstislav, and all norther territories ; Ruler of Iveria, Kartalina, and the Kabardinian lands and Armenian territories – Hereditary Ruler and Lord of the Cherkess and Mountian princes and others; Lord of Turkestan, Heir of Norway, Duke of Schleswig-Holstien, Stormarn, Ditmarsch, Oldenburg,….” And so forth and so forth. Each title would cover more than a page of Archaic writing.

Secondly I’d like to state that the word Tsar was not just a name or word made or by the Russians. It translates back and forth into Ceasar, Tsesar, Keiser, Emperor, and many other different types of rulers. The English spelling, either Tsar of Czar, has been accepted as correct since the 18th or 19 Century. During the 19th century the French adopted it and passed it onto English.

The word Tsar originated from the Austrian diplomat Baron Sigismund Herberstien. His work entitled Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii (1549) ,translated as Literally notes on Muscovite Affairs, was the main source of information for the Russian and early western civilization.

While the correct pronunciation of Tsar is /Tsar’/ many English speaking people pronounce it /zAr/.

The Tsar’s family was not left out. Each type of family member had their own Title. Tsesarevich was the father of the Tsar at the time. Tsarevich was the son of the Tsar at the time.Tsarevina was the daughter of the Tsar at the time. And Tsesarevina was the wife of the Tsar at the time.
