Isnít smoking great? Itís not like smoking gets teenagers in trouble when found in possession of cigarettes. Its not like cigarettes kill so many people a year and itís not like ď second hand smokeĒ even harms non-smokers. Smoking can cause trouble, Tabacco smoke is a human killer, and even if you donít smoke you can be in harm.
According to DHS Code of Conduct policy; if a student is found in possession of tobacco/cigarettes products on DHS property the student will be subject to an automatic three day Alternative Room assignment with written notification to parents for the first offense. The second offense shall result in a five-day out-of-school suspension during which time an expulsion hearing will be held. If caught in possession of tabacco products in a USD 260 building, it will be considered a violation, and will be reported to the Derby Police Department.
Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a drug that is addictive; which can cause death if you canít quit. More than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are caused from smoking related illnesses. Smoking greatly increases your risks for lung cancer, and other cancers.
Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, co-workers, fellow students, and others whom breathe the smoke; this is called second-hand-smoke. Among infants to the age of 18 months, second-hand-smoke can be associated with 300,000 cases of bronchitis, and pneumonia each year. If both parents smoke, a teenager is more than twice as likely to end up smoking than a teenager whose parents are both non-smokers. In a household in which one parent smokes the teen is also more likely to smoke.
Smoking can cause trouble, Tabasco is a human killer, and even if you donít smoke you can be in harm. Smoking is not permitted on DHS property or USD 260 district buildings, tobacco kills over 400,000 people a year, and even if you donít smoke you can still be harmed. Isnít smoking great?
