Does Work Interfere With School....
" THEN THIS GIANT GORILLA CAME OUT FROM NO WHERE AND CRUSHED MY CAR LIKE IT WAS A TOY." " Is that the best you can do Mr. Arnold?" asked an anonymous teacher of mine. "Well, to be honest with you, I had to work," I admitted. "I think I prefer the gorilla story, Matthew!"
I could get up, go to school, take a nap, wake up, eat dinner, and go back to bed or I could get up, go to school, and hurry home to get to work on time, work until after dark and come home for a cold dinner and two tons of homework. You chose...Which day would you prefer? Some people, like me, do not have a choice. I have to keep a job to pay for my car, school supplies, and a girlfriend. Needless to say, the girlfriend is the most expensive. But, for me, a job is necessary.
I think that school is an important part of life. But, my job takes up most of my time during the day. I work until late at night and I go to school early. This hectic schedule often does affect my grades. In fact, it did during high school. I spent so much time doing my job that I could not focus on my grades and sports. One result of this is this English class. I could be at LSU, but I am stuck here in Eunice because I felt more obligated to do my job than I did to study. I focused more on my work ethic than on my grade point average.
Now, I work two jobs, one in the morning and one at night. When I am not at school, I am either working in the fields or being a selling electronics in the store. I work at least sixty hours a week and I do not have any free time. This past weekend, I worked from nine o’clock Saturday morning until six o’clock Sunday morning. Then, I got up and re‑opened the store at noon. The result of this was no time left to spend with my girlfriend, friends or, most importantly, my homework. My jobs usually leave me drained, tired, and in no mood to study.
I like my jobs and want to continue working and paying for my own things. Although I work a lot, I know that I can find a way to see my friends, keep my job, maintain a good attendance record, and continue to make good grades. I just need to find a way to do all those things at the same time.
