Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)

Bertolt Brecht original name is EUGEN BERTHOLD FRIEDRICH BRECHT. He is German poet and playwright. In both text book and BUYIBT, he is also introduced as famous theater reformer. He departed the theater from the conventions of theatrical illusion and developed the drama as a social and ideological forum. As same as Morgan said “Adolf Hitler beat him to it”, in 1933 he went into exile. His books were burned in German. He went to Denmark and then Unit States. During that period, he wrote several great plays. Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder; Thirty Years\' War; Leben des Galilei ; Der gute Mensch von Sezuan which is a parable play set in prewar China; Der Aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui; Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti , a Volksstuck and so on. In 1949, he went back to German to help his play “Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder” get on the stage. He died of a heart attack. Before he died, he had received Stalin Peace Prize in Moscow and got a great successful in Pairs. So I don’t think he was so poor like Morgan said turned back to German and died.

Terence Rattigan(1911-1977)

Terence Rattigan was one of Britain\'s most important dramatists. His famous light

comedy French Without Tears (1936) was his early success. I was supprised that Mogan just used one sentence to decribe him and didn’t joke on his moving abroad, spent his reat live in Bermuda and after 15 years his death, his play “The Deep Blus Sea” was showed at London and got great success, he then became as the century’s finest playwright. His play The Winslow Boy (1946), The Browning Version (1948), The Deep Blue Sea(1952), and Separate Tables(1954) are constantly revived on stage and TV.
