Analysis of Atticus Finch
Atticus Finch is a caring and interesting character in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. He is the father of Jem(Jeremy) and Scout Finch. He seems to be a strong, but controlled man. Atticus’ wife died earlier and he is currently raising Jem and Scout with Calpurnia, the housekeeper.
Atticus stands out in Maycomb because he is different from everyone else. He isn’t a racist and doesn’t care what other people think of him. He is educated, unlike many others, and is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson, a black man convicted of raping a white woman.
Atticus shows love towards his children in the way that he doesn’t want to give the guns to his children, but eventually he gives in to their wants and give them to him. Another example is in the way he didn’t let the children go outside when the mad dog was out their. "
He also cares for their education. He makes a bargain with Scout that he will read with Scout every night if she’ll go to school. And he cares for their well-being. He tells Scout not to beat up other kids because he knows it will come back to her even though she doesn’t know this. "'Atticus, is all this behavin' an' stuff gonna make things different? I mean are you--?' I felt his hand on the back of my head. 'Don't you worry about anything,' he said. 'It's not time to worry.'"(Harper Lee, p. 134)Scout respects him and follows his orders-- for a little while.
Jem and Scout also care about what Atticus says and does. Scout follows his advice and Jem looks out for his protecting, like when Jem and Scout won't leave the jail. "'Son, I said go home.' Jem shook his head."(Harper Lee, p. 152) With that and a little help from Scout, they successfully defended off the lynch mob.
Atticus is a caring and stong-minded character in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. I think he is the best character in the book. Instead of him fighting with his fists like most men in the book, he fights with his mind, which i really like about him.
