Aluminum was the first discovered by Danish chemist Christan Oersted in 1825 using a chemical process involving potassium amalgam. The process was later improved by French chemist Friedrich Wohler by using metallic potassium. Woholer was also the first person to measure the specific gravity of aluminum. Pure aluminum is found in an ore called bauxite. IT is estimated that aluminum is formed on about 8% of the earth's surface. Of all the metallic elements aluminum is the most abundant. Aluminum is a light weight metal with a bright silver luster. It's symbol is Al. Aluminum has a density of 2.70 and an atomic mass of 26.983. At a pure state aluminum melts at 1220¹F(660¹C). Of all the structural metals aluminum is one of the lightest with only magnesium being lighter aluminum is very soft and not very strong when it is at it's purest state. The strength of aluminum is increased by alloying it with other metals and elements. Aluminum is one of the best conductors of heat and electricity, it also reflects heat and light very well. Aluminum is fond in many Rocks and minerals on the earth's crust. Because aluminum is not very strong and is highly reactivate with Oxygen, water, acids, and bases it is compounded with other metals and elements to from alloys for common uses. In Society Aluminum Alloys are used in many ways because of it's light weight and versatility. As more and more ways are discovered to strengthened Aluminum with other elements more uses have also been discovered Aluminum is used in aircrafts, Electrical Engineering, Windows, doors, buildings, packaging and many other things. When aluminum is compounded with other it gets stronger for multiple uses. It is usually is compounded with copper, magnesium silicon, zinc, oxygen, and potassium. the strength of the alloy depends on the element it is compounded with.
