Is there a dilemma in your life where you canít come up with a straight answer? In todayís society there are many controversial issues. One such issue that affects many people is abortion. Some people are pro-choice (supporters of abortion) others are pro-life (against abortion). This has been a hot topic for a very long time. There are many reasons why abortion should be illegal.
Abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy before the fetus is capable of independent life. According to Encarta Encyclopedia, abortion is the termination of a pregnancy before birth, resulting in death of the fetus. There are two types of abortion. One is unplanned and the other is induced. An unplanned abortion is most commonly known as a miscarriage and usually occurs during the first three months of pregnancy. The second form of abortion is induced abortion. This is when the termination of the fetus is planned. An induced abortion is performed using drugs or surgery.
One reason abortion should be illegal is because it is dangerous to the pregnant woman. Women in increasing numbers...hundreds...thousands...and even tens of thousands who have had an abortion have had their wombs infected and destroyed. Some women have even been sterilized. During the abortion, dilation is used to open the cervix wide enough so that the opening could have room for the abortion instruments. Unlike a normal birth, where the cervix is slowly opened during many hours, in an abortion the cervix is stretched open in just a few seconds. The unnatural form of dilation is very dangerous and can cause permanent physical damage to the pregnant woman or even cause her to die. For example, Rebecca Bell from Indiana was 17 when she found out she was pregnant. She went to Planned Parenthood where she found out that she needed parental consent to get an abortion. She didnít want her parents to know, so she drove her car 110 miles to Kentucky to get an abortion where she didnít need parental consent. After Rebecca got back, she began to feel very weak. She was sick all the time and was loosing her appetite. Her mother took her to the hospital thinking that her daughter had caught a bad case of the flu and would be fine in a few days. Rebecca Bell died on September 16, 1988. The staff performed an autopsy and discovered she died from a failed abortion.
Another reason abortion should be illegal is because it is a form of murder. The babyís heart begins to beat at around 18-25 days, before most women even find out that theyíre pregnant. At eight weeks the unborn child can blink, suck its thumb, turn in the motherís womb, jump, frown, swallow, and even move its tongue. Those are features of a human being and not just a piece of tissue. A woman can choose to abort her unborn child even at six months into the pregnancy. The baby can now breathe in, breathe out, and even cry. The eyes have completely formed, and the tongue has developed taste buds. The baby can even hear the voice of its mother and the people around her. If it was just a piece of tissue, could it hear, taste, breathe, or even have eyes? Having an abortion is just like killing any person. Human life begins at conception. "\'Conception confers life and makes that life one of a kind,\'" said Dr. Bernard M. Nathanson, who was a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist. Therefore, it is wrong to murder the innocent child in the womb because it is a person within a person.
Another reason abortion should be illegal is because even if its biological parents donít want the child, there are plenty of people who do. Adoption is a better and much safer way for the woman not to have to keep her baby. Many families are on waiting lists to adopt children. The baby will get a chance to live and experience life outside of its birthmotherís womb and someone who is unable to have children will get the chance to be a mother or father if they adopt this child who would have been aborted. There are so many unfortunate women in this world who are not able
